Ein toller Text von Dale Pendell auf sagewisdom.org:
Dale Pendell has graciously agreed to share this, the Salvia divinorum chapter from his extraordinary book: Pharmako/Poeia: Plant Powers, Poisons, and Herbcraft. Published by Mercury House, San Francisco, 1995. There is a tremendous amount of depth in this piece of writing. Every time I read it I discover something new. Pendell has distilled the essence of the Salvia divinorum experience into a vessel of poetry.

If you would like information on ordering this book, please go here.

"An epic poem on plant humours, an abstruse alchemic treatise, an experiential narrative jigsaw puzzle, a hip and learned wild-nature reference text, a comic paen to cosmic consciousness, an ecological handbook, a dried-herb pastiche, a counterculture encyclopedia of ancient fact and lore."
Allen Ginsberg

"Dale Pendell reactivates the ancient connection between the bardic poet and the shaman."
Terence McKenna

Fundstück aus dem Netz:
Health Benefits and Therapeutic Potential of Salvia Divinorum

Foreword:
Hey guys I delved into the realm of Salvia Divinorum recently there's so much to learn about this plant and so much more that isn't known. Smiley Aside from reckless irresponsible teenagers having seizures on Youtube, there are many positive effects to be derived from this substance. As a respectful tribute to the beautiful emerald colored ornamental I have provided a list of effects and possible uses maybe some people haven't suggested yet.

Lets start with what we know from traditional use:

* Relieves headaches/rheumatism (though there are incidences of headaches after high dosages Undecided)
* Regulates eliminatory Functions(stops diarrhea and also acts as diuretic)
* Anti-inflammatory/anti-nociceptive properties in Gi tract of mice suggested(this should be helpful with cramps, gas, bloating, ulcers etc)
(http://www.researchgate.net/publication ... _receptors)
* Many reports have suggested that Salvia produces Anti-Depressant effects. In fact one method of therapeutic usage a woman suffering suffering from depression utilized, was to use a preparation of salvia divinorum leaves taken as an oral dose of 2–3 leaves (1/2 to 3/4 of a gram of leaf material) three times per week (the leaves are chewed and held in the mouth for 15–30 minutes). (https://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/sa ... nal3.shtml)

* Treatment of Alcohol /Opiate/Cocaine dependency

Promising Effects:

* Effects of Salvia could modulate mood for mood disorders, such as a possible treatment of Bipolar disorder pg.23 (http://www.bookpump.com/dps/pdf-b/2337775b.pdf)
* Could smoking Salvia Cigarettes be used to wean off tobacco? (excerpt: "Scientists know of four distinct types of opioid receptors, but until now the structure of the ‘salvia receptor’, and the details about how salvinorin A and other drugs interact with it, was a mystery."
"The finding could accelerate the development of new drugs to treat addiction, depression, anxiety, chronic pain and many other conditions. "
"The research team crystallized KOR(kappa-opiod receptor) using JDTic, a drug currently in early-stage human trials; JDTic keeps KOR in an inactive state and blocks the actions of salvinorin A. In studies using animal models, JDTic has shown promise for treating cocaine and nicotine addiction, depression and anxiety."
"The downside of JDTic and similar drugs targeting KOR is that they can exert their actions for weeks")

So... for now sticking to natural sources is a good rule of thumb, until proper safety profiles have been established.
(http://news.unchealthcare.org/news/2012 ... tor-solved)
* It has been suggested Salvia also promotes calmness/anti-anxiety(In low or threshold doses of course)
* Pain relief as a non-addictive opiod(Activation of K-opiod receptors induces analgesic/sedation effects)
* Topical Usage I haven't really seen much about this could Salvinorin A or raw leafs made into a poultice or salve of some sort? Maybe in the future chemists could develop Salvia bath salts ha ha laugh

Uninvestigated Effects:

* Motivational Effects (Im curious about the effects of Salvia use on enthusiasm to accomplish goals, are they more positive or negative? After taking Salvia does one feel vitalized or drained from the experience?).
* Increased Concentration (more apparent during Meditation) perhaps at below-hallucinogenic doses or threshold dosages maybe at .25 of a gram or less of leaves.

* Treating terminally ill patients (possibly as a psychotherapy type thing) Salvia's properties of providing insight into personal issues, and aesthetic/sensual appreciation may mediate/benefit those who are not long for this world.
(http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/sal ... ects.shtml)
* Possible Focus/Creativity enhancing effects, there are a few reports on erowid suggesting this, as well as indicated by a few musicians and artists having used the substance to produce some very unique pieces from Salvia experiences.

Feel free to add more to the list, if there's anything I missed Grin

According to Don Alejandro ni-to, or the mushrooms-that-one-takes (hongos para tomar, probably not a literal translation, see Wasson 1980) are unlike the other two plants. The fungi are delicado (delicate), nervioso (nervous), una cosa de envidia (a thing of envy). Unfortunately the English translations of these terms do not convey the Indian-Spanish concept of magic that has a dangerous and sinister side. Santa Ana and San Venanzio, the Saints the curandero associates with the mushrooms, were not as good at healing as San Pedro and the Virgén María, the patrons of the Salvia and the morning glory. Eating too many of the fungi can “leave one crazy” and the visions are often trucos (tricky). Other Mazatec informants have attributed such characteristics to the visions, saying that one has to separate the true form the false (Incháustegui 1977). Wasson has reported that misuse of the mushroom can lead to madness (Wasson and Wasson 1957). Munn and Wasson have given complementary descriptions of shamanic use of mushrooms among the Mazatecs (Munn 1979; Wasson 1980). Psilocybin and psilocin, the vision-inducing compounds in the fungi, were isolated by Hofmann, who used himself as a subject for their activity. He reported that a dose of 2.4 g of dried Psilocybe mexicana Heim (an average amount for a curandero) produced effects he could not control or resist. A colleague “was transformed” into an Aztec priest and at the height of the experience Hofmann felt he “would be torn into this whirlpool of form and color and would dissolve” (Hofmann 1980). This experience was quite unlike the mild one produced by S. divinorum. As Don Alejandro stated it, “The María, on the other hand accepts you (la María, en cambio, te acepta).”

SD zellschädigend? - Cytotoxic Effects of Salvinorin A, A Major Constituent of Salvia divinorum.
Abstract

S. divinorum is a psychoactive plant that, in the last years, has been consumed as a recreational drug of abuse. Salvinorin A is the main constituent and the responsible for the psychoactive effects attributed to this herb. Both S. divinorum and salvinorin A have become controlled drugs in various countries, but they are not listed in the Schedules of the United Nations Drug Conventions. Regarding the effects of the consumption of S. divinorum, almost all studies are based on in vivo or on survey-based studies and there are no studies on its toxicity in vitro. Furthermore, all studies are focused in the acute toxicological effects promoted by this plant. So, it is of utmost importance to further investigate the effects of S. divinorum and salvinorin A, particularly on in vitro models, after a prolonged time exposure. In this context, the present work evaluated the toxicity in vitro induced by S. divinorum or salvinorin A in six cell lines, through MTT assays and LC50 determination. Overall, results showed that both S. divinorum and salvinorin A are cytotoxic, dose- and time-dependent. Also, Hep G2, and, in a lesser extent, Caco 2 cells showed lower sensitivity to S. divinorum and salvinorin A, comparing to the other cells. To our knowledge, this is the first work focused on in vitro toxicity of S. divinorum and salvinorin A using a variety of cell lines, extensively described in literature and widely used in a variety of in vitro studies.

The Association of Salvia divinorum and Psychotic Disorders: A Review of the Literature and Case Series.
Abstract

The association of substance abuse and psychotic disorders is of interest to clinicians, academics, and lawmakers. Commonly abused substances, such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, and alcohol, have all been associated with substance-induced psychosis. Hallucinogens can induce desired psychedelic effects and undesirable psychomimetic reactions. These are usually transient and resolve once the duration of action is over. Sometimes, these effects persist, causing distress and requiring intervention. This article focuses on the hallucinogenic substance Salvia divinorum, the use of which has been observed, particularly among youth worldwide. We present background information based on a review of the literature and on our own clinical encounters, as highlighted by two original case reports. We hypothesize that consumption of Salvia divinorum could be associated with the development of psychotic disorders. We propose that clinicians routinely inquire about the use of Salvia in patients with substance use disorders or psychotic illnesses. More research is required to assess any relationship between Salvia divinorum and psychosis. Additionally, we advocate increased public and medical awareness of this substance and other emerging drugs of abuse.
