Ekstatische Erfahrungen gehören seit jeher zum Erfahrungsschatz der Menschheit. Sie treten zu allen Zeiten und in allen Kulturen auf. Dennoch unterlagen sie in westlichen Kulturen seit der Antike einem Ausgrenzungsprozess, der weltanschauliche und religiöse Gründe hat. Ihre Erforschung blieb entsprechend bruchstückhaft.
Dieser interdisziplinär ausgerichete Band versammelt ein breites Spektrum von Beiträgen. In ihnen nähern sich die Autoren aus kulturgeschichtlichen, psychologisch-psychiatrischen, neurophysiologischen und anthropologischen Perspektiven der Mannigfaltigkeit ekstatischer Zustände. Auch psychotherapeutische Aspekte finden Berücksichtigung.
Hinsichtlich der Vielfalt der behandelten Aspekte handelt es sich um eine der umfassendsten wissenschaftlichen Darstellungen des Phänomens Ekstase.

"The town of Ouidah - Benin is the spiritual capital of Vodun in West Africa where all pay homage to the Python-God. Presently there are an estimated 50 million worshippers worldwide. An important aspect of the religion is spirit possession, through which the spirits speak to the devotees only for a short time during the ceremonies. This trance mechanism is a way to heal and get advice about daily matters. I lived with the Beninese 'Hounongan Zanzan Zinho Kledjé' family who adheres the Gambada fetish or the serpent spirit, the basis of the well-known Damballah cult in Haïti. In Vodun and related African diasporic traditions a primordial way to obtain a spiritual experience is by being possessed by the Iwa or spirit. I was fortunate to encounter and document this intense experience. During a ceremony I witnessed the individual trance of two devotees. The genuine uncontrollable muscle spasms, vocalizations and peculiar eye gazes showed me this was an unfeigned event.

I felt strongly this women did not feign the possession as f. ex. I witnessed next to their peculiar eye gazes a lot of uncontrollable muscle spasms. Photographically I wanted to emphasize their raw female power by isolating these women from their surroundings and focussing on them."

Schamanische Zeremonie in Nepal



A shaman talks with a dead soul in order to relieve it. For the ritual, Raj Bahadur Gurung is using the shaman's dagger "the phurbu" to protect him against evil spirit.

In windswept Siberia, shamans have for generations cured illnesses without touching their patients, sung with their diaphragms and controlled the weather.
Some can travel over long distances and even levitate, hovering above the birch trees. They regularly communicate with kind and evil spirits.
One of them, Tyurgen, manages to balance shamanism with life in industrial Chelyabinsk.
Apart from his spiritual activities, he practices a unique musical style - electronic music with folk instruments, throat singing, and folklore-inspired lyrics.
We also meet a doctor of anthropology who explains what really goes on in a shaman's brain when he is in a trance state.
