Die Suruahà-Indianer leben tief im Urwald Amazoniens. Sie sind ein Volk der Witwen, Witwer und Waisenkinder – es gibt kaum einen Indio, dessen engste Verwandte noch alle am Leben sind. Diese haben sich auf die Reise zu den gemeinsamen Vorfahren begeben – freiwillig. Die Selbsttötung ist ein selbstverständlicher Teil ihrer Kultur.
Nach zehn Tagen Kanufahrt und Fußmarsch erreichen der deutsche Zahnarzt Roland Garve und der brasilianische Psychologe Mario de Silva ihr Gebiet. Mitten im Urwald, auf einem improvisierten „Zahnarztstuhl“ aus Ästen und Palmenblättern, behandelt der "weiße Dentista" die Suruahà. Der Deutsche wundert sich, wie schmerzunempfindlich die Indianer offenbar sind. Das liegt an der Droge Kumady, die durch einen Geierknochen geschnupft wird. Aber auch der Stoff Cunahá gehört zum Alltag der Indios. Alle Suruahà, die älter als 12 Jahre alt sind, haben Cunahá schon selbst ausprobiert – häufig mit tödlichen Folgen. Doch der Tod eines Familienmitglieds wird nicht betrauert wie bei uns. Bei den Suruahà ist das Gift vielmehr ein willkommenes „Vehikel ins Jenseits“.
„360° - Die GEO-Reportage“ begleitet den deutschen Zahnarzt Dr. Roland Garve zu den Suruahà und geht den mysteriösen Selbstmorden der Amazonas-Indianer nach.
Die Reportage ist 20 Jahre alt. Deshalb wird abwertend von Drogenmissbrauch geredet.
